It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Katie Milner and her Merlin International Ginetta G40 on the famous Silverstone International circuit, but she came out of it with a decent haul of points.
Qualifying on Saturday took place in drenched conditions and Katie did well to post a solid sixth place, in both the fastest and second-fastest standings. The rain mixed things up a little, with several relatively quick drivers in the lower reaches of the top ten.
The rain had thankfully subsided by the time the first race was starting, but it created the additional problem of the track surface being completely different to how it was in qualifying. Katie found it hard-going and dropped two places on her first lap. She was far from alone in being caught out by the changing conditions as a couple of the drivers who had started in front of her also slipped down, including the polesitter.
Katie battled on as best she could and maintained as steady 7th place until she was spun round by Tom Golding and dropped back. The two had been scrapping for position and Katie had been in determined pursuit.
She had to make do with eleventh spot, a comfortable 11.9s ahead of twelfth place and a tantalising half-second from a top-ten finish.
The sun was out for Race 2 and the track was much drier, but the drama kept on coming. Katie started in sixth and was immediately sucked into another battle with Tom Golding, followed by two others who were in very aggressive form and on their way to penalties for track limits.
A spin from leader Adam Smalley gave her another place back, but yellow flags meant that the drivers following were able to get close.
Katie spent most of the second part of the race leading a small upper-midfield pack. She had to push hard just to keep them behind her, as they had the advantage of her slipstream. Her patience and discipline was vindicated at the chequered flag, when she was moved up to sixth place following a ten-second track limits penalty to her Race 1 nemesis Tom Golding.
