Do I need specialist sports car insurance cover?

Most car insurers will be happy to provide you with a quote for your sports or classic car. But you might want to consider a specialist insurer who understands that your vehicle is no standard car and provides bespoke cover fitting of your pride and joy.

Also, you might get a more competitive quote from a specialist insurer. Performance sports cars fall into higher insurance groups and some insurers perceive them as more of a risk, charging you more to cover them.

A specialist insurer will be used to covering these ‘high risk’ performance cars and provide you with a more affordable quote. They will take the time to understand the different risks specific to you and your sports car and may offer policy features such as cover for malicious damage, personal injury or track days.

What classifies a sports car as a sports car for insurance purposes?

Put simply, a sports car is lighter and more powerful than your average car. Most performance sports cars only have two seats and are lower to the ground than other cars.

Designed with an emphasis on dynamic performance, such as handling, acceleration or top speed, you won’t be able to get the most out of your sports car by sticking to the roads. But that’s not to say that you can’t still get a lot of enjoyment from cruising through UK high streets, turning some heads in your direction.

If you did want to get the optimum performance out of your sports car, you’d need to take it onto the track. However, most standard car insurance won’t cover you for track days, so you’d need to speak to a specialist insurer like Reis if you wanted to hit some high speeds on a circuit somewhere.

Will sports car insurance cover you on a track?

Don’t assume that your sports car insurance policy will cover you on a race track – if it does, it might only provide protection for certain damage and personal injury.

At Reis Motorsport, our sports insurance can cover your first six UK/Europe based track days (excluding Nurburgring/Nordschleife) during the period of cover, free of charge. But track day cover is restricted to accidental damage and fire following an accident. Recovery and/or repatriation of the vehicle is specifically excluded from all track day cover/policies.

Insurers may also cap payouts at a certain amount (e.g., £50,000) for any damage incurred on a track. So, if your sports car is worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, you might want to consider taking out specific track day insurance to ensure the full amount is covered. Reis can help with that, too.

What are the benefits of sports car insurance?

You might not want to take your modified, classic or historic sports vehicle out onto the track, but you may want to proudly display it at shows and exhibitions – specialist insurance from our commercial team can arrange cover for these types of events, too.

How to reduce the cost of your performance car insurance

There are ways to reduce the cost of sports car insurance including:

1. Stay within the law – whilst it might be tempting to want to unleash the power and test the performance of your sports car, you risk getting a fixed penalty and points if you’re caught breaking the law. This will raise your premiums the next time you try to insure your sports car.
2. Build up your no claims discount – just as with standard insurance, you can build up a no claims discount on sports car insurance. So, drive your sports car with the care and consideration it deserves.
3. Keep the miles down – we all know a sports car is to be enjoyed, but you might want to save it for the weekends and special occasions if you want to lower the premium cost.
4. Choose a more common car – one of the things insurers assess before providing you with a quote is the availability of common parts. So, consider opting for a well-known or more established manufacturer of sports cars, through which parts are easier to come by.
5. Resist modifications – fitting after-market mods can push up your premiums, especially if they affect the performance or look of the vehicle. Always declare any modifications to your insurer as they could affect the price you pay for cover.
6. Consider who’s driving – young or inexperienced drivers may pay more for insurance on a sports or classic car.
7. Pay more excess – if you know you’re a careful driver and will do everything you can to avoid being in an accident, it could be worth offering a higher voluntary excess payment. This may also make you consider the best time to claim on your specialist sports car insurance.
